Darwin is the territorial capital of the Northern Territory of Australia. At present, Darwin is a developing regional centre, a popular tourist destination and an important hub of military and mining. Darwin lies close to many Asian destinations including Singapore and Jakarta and fence it is cited as the "Gateway to Asia". It boasts of a multicultural population with seventy-five nationalities. Darwin also features in Peter Goldsworthy's book -‘Maestro' in which it is described as.. “That small, tropical hothouse of a port, half outback, half oriental, lying at the tip of northern Australia” History - The first European maps of Darwin were created by the Dutch who visited the northern coastline in the 1600s. Darwin have undergone through much tumultuous times in its past. On 19 February 1942 at 0957, during the Pacific War, Darwin was attacked by 183 Japanese warplanes. It was the same fleet which had bombed Pearl Harbor. On November 12, 1943, Darwin experienced 64 air attacks in World War II. Darwin was granted city status on Australia Day (26 January) 1959. On 25 December 1974, Darwin was destroyed on by Cyclone Tracy. However the city was rebuild later.
