Hiking in Port Douglas, Queensland offers a grand opportunity for sightseeing and simultaneously is known for its wilderness and one might want to be armed with the required insect repellents in case they are trudging the tropical rainforests in Port Douglas. The Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island is one of the world's most renowned walks, and takes at least three days to travel. Fraser Island's Forest Lakes Circuit takes you around the sand island, through dense rainforests and beautiful beaches. One of the island's attractions is the many dune lakes, which are home to various species of turtles and freshwater fish.
On the mainland, the Rainbow Beach Circuit will take you around the Great Sandy National Park. Named after the colourful sands that line the shores here, this trail takes you through a chain of environments from rainforests to woodlands of Banksia and Scribbly Gum.
Further inland, you'll find the countryside changes to a landscape of magnificent gorges and clear billabongs you can swim in. The Upper Gorge Circuit starts at the Lawn Hill camping area, and takes you to the top of the cliff face and past the Indarri swimming hole. Be sure to check conditions before diving in though, as it's not safe to swim here during flood season!
