Started in 1993, the Village Carnivale has been celebrated with much pomp and splendor since then. Locals coming from the local sugar industry to the fishing fleet take part in the joyous festivities. Locals indulge in unrestrained merrymaking during this weekend. The colorful events are huge draws for locals and tourists alike. Port Douglas Village Carnivale began as an occasion to mark the opening of “the tourist season and foster development in the area to give it national and international acclaim. 2002 saw the 10 anniversary celebrations of the carnivale. Its ever-increasing popularity has been attracting several tourists from far and wide. The basis of the occasion is the concept of community. Designing a float to augmenting funds for the school, club or charity, carving out sculptures and being one with the crowd all accentuate the community feeling. The major attractions of the carnivale are Blessing of the fleet, the Marina Mirage longest lunch, the Four Mile Beach family fun day and the Marina Mirage Seafood Extravaganza. The Port Douglas Yacht Club Fishing Competition is also a famous sporting event with the yachts participating in the extravagant regatta. It is hosted by the Yacht club over two days.
