The Mowbray Valley in Port Douglas was a hunting ground for the Chabbuki (Tjapukai) tribe of aborigines. They wandered through the valley on hunting expeditions between Port Douglas and Mona Mona camp near Kuranda.

In 1877, Christie Palmerston and his friend William Little/Lakeland/Leighton and aboriginal guide Pompo found a route ideal for wagons and pack teams from the Hodgkinson goldfield down to Island Point, which would now become the port. Palmerston named the river that took them down the range after William Matthew Mowbray. Their route over the range was later named the Bump Track. They inscribed their initials on the tree they camped under at Mowbray. The Teamsters' Park in Craiglie now preserves the replica. Moybray Valley had played host to James Reynolds with his wife Margaret and Severin Berner (Barney) Andreassen. 20,000 cases of oranges and mandarins were sent from the port Douglas harbor, mostly brought from Mowbray valley. A violent cyclone caused irreparable damage to some of the houses and many mango trees in the Mowbray valley.
