Yachting or sailing as an international sporting event began in 1851 in America when a syndicate of members of the New York Yacht Club built and sailed a 101 foot yacht to America. They won a trophy in this event called Hundred Guineas Cup which was renamed The America’s Cup. America retained the cup until an Australian yacht finally beat the Americans in 1983.
