History of Seymour Theatre Center, Sydney

Seymour Theatre Center, Sydney is the result of a significant legacy left behind by Everest York Seymour, Sydney businessman in 1966, for 'the construction of a building to serve as a centre for the cultivation, education and performance of musical and dramatic arts...'. With the University of Sydney made the trustee of this bequest, the inheritance was devoted to the construction of the Seymour Centre, designed by Allan Jack and Cottier and was inaugurated in 1975.

Most recently, the Seymour Theatre Center, Sydney was internally refurbished in 2000 as per the novel designs of Lahz Nimmo Architects.

The Seymour Centre serves as a multi-purpose performing arts venue housing three theatres, spacious rehearsal studios, an a la carte restaurant, bar facilities, catering service, expansive foyer and gallery spaces.

The three theatres at Seymour Theatre Center, Sydney are:

- The York Theatre - The thrust stage with amphitheatre style seating accommodating 788 persons makes it an ideal venues for the presentation of dramatic works, music or concert style performances. It provides wheelchair access and infra-red sound aid system for its patrons.

- The Everest Theatre - This 605-seat theatre is suitable for hosting various types of events, be it for the presentation of musical events, dance and drama, or business and industry presentations. It provides wheelchair access and infrared sound aid system for its patrons.
- The Downstairs Theatre - This experimental theatre space, with 150 seats is suitable for small productions.
- For a more intimate live music event, the 'Sound Lounge' at the Centre can be booked as it can seat up to 100 people.

Access to Seymour Theatre Center, Sydney

By Public transport
The Seymour Centre is easily accessible by public transport:

- You can catch a Train to either Central Station, and then take a bus or walk up Broadway and City Road, or go to Redfern Station and walk via Lawson and Ivy Streets.

- You can also take State transit buses from the city numbered 422, 423, 426, and 428 (from Castlereagh Street and Railway Square at Central Station) that stop outside the Seymour Centre.

Those coming to the theatre by a private vehicle can park at University of Sydney multi-storey car park next to the Seymour Centre (corner of Cleveland and Shepherd Streets, entry from Shepherd Street.
