The State Theatre, Sydney opened its gates for the general public on 7th June, 1929. It is a magnificent structure which has been regarded as a building of great historical significance by The National Trust of Australia. The Greater Union Organization is in charge of operations of the State Theatre that was to become "The Empire's Greatest Theatre". Henry White is the designer of this grand structure in which he has fused Gothic, Italian and Art deco design to give it a palatial appearance. The Koh-I- Nor chandelier is the second largest in the world and weighs over four tones. The Dress Circle gallery contains artworks from famous artists like William Dobell and Charles Wheeler. The State Theatre, Sydney, Australia was the brain child of the owner of Union Theatres, Stuart Doyle. Bandleader Will Prior performed on the opening night. "The Patriot" was the first movie to be featured at the State Theatre, Sydney. It was accompanied with the playing of the mighty Wurlitzer organ by Price Dunlavy. In the 1930's the theatre witnessed performances by René Maxwell and the State Beauty Ballet. After a first decade of successful performances the State Theatre, Sydney was destined to enjoy a long career amongst all the Sydney theatres. During the Second World War the theatre provided news of the war through the regular screening of the Movietone news-reels. Once the war was over it again became a house of entertainment with theatres and films. With other source providing film or theatrical entertainment, the State Theatre was the major site for entertainment in Sydney. Films became popular in Australia with the rise of Hollywood stars and this made movies more popular. With the popularity of movies increased the popularity of the State Theatre, Sydney which screened innumerable movies. Today the State Theatre, Sydney uses the best technology amongst the various other theatres in Sydney to provide the audience the high quality performances. It is a place which has a rich heritage of dance, drama, music and movies. It has been in the business of successfully entertaining people for more than 70 years. Tickets can be booked here between 9:00am and 5:00pm from Monday to Friday. On the night of the performance the time is extended to 8:00pm.
