The fever engulfed the whole world and Australia being a part of it was not spared. Basketball has captured the hearts of the millions around the world and is definitely one of the most popular sports around. The game has a good repute in Australia as the national team has its own share of success in the International arena. The game has seen a gradual development in the city of Sydney too in the past. Basketball in Sydney has made a mark in the Basketball arena of Australia and the sport has definitely on the reckoning for being one of the most popular sports in the country.

The National Basketball League is the top level professional basketball competition in the country. The league started off in 1979. till 1998 the league was played in the winter season (April-September) but from the 1998-1999 season the competition shifted to the summer time (October-April). This was done in order to avoid clash with the popular Football fixture.

Presently there are twelve teams competing for the league title. There are teams in every capital cities of the country. One of the famous teams of Sydney are the West Sydney Razorbacks.
