The summer season of tennis in Australia is kicked off by the Medibank International Tennis Tournament, held in the beginning of January at the Sydney International Tennis Centre. It is one of the most prestigious of the various tennis tournaments in Australia and is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world with a lineage that dates back to 1885. Being a run-up to the Australian Open, the draw at the Medibank International sees leading tennis players from around the world, like Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal in the recent past.
The Sydney Open tennis is another one of the important Sydney tennis tournaments. It is a Tier-1 tournament and sees the best players from Australia in action during the first and the second weeks of February. The tournament is also held at the Sydney International Tennis Centre.
