Sydney is one of the only three cities in Australia, which has an extensive tram service. The Sydney trams service is one of the oldest public transport system of the city. The history of Sydney trams service goes back to 1861. In ancient times the city had horse drawn trams. Steam tramways were however established in the year 1879. The electrification of trams started in the year 1898. However, in the year 1961, tram service were withdrawn completely form the streets of the city. In 1997, with introduction of the modern Metro Light Rail, tram services were reintroduced in the city thereby making it one of the most popular modes of public transportation of Sydney. The Sydney trams service covered almost all parts of the city and surrounding areas. The major routes that were followed by the trams includes the Eastern Suburb Lines, South Western Line, Western Lines, North Shore Lines, Manly Lines, Enfield Lines, South Suburb Lines Castle Hill Lines and the City Service. Circular Quay is the most important tram terminus. Nearly all the trams depart from and arrive at this point, especially those of Eastern Suburb Lines. The major tram lines of this area included the Bronte Line, Watson’s Bay Line, Clovelly Line, Coogee Line and others. Other routes that were followed by the trams in the other areas of the city included Erskineville Line, Cooks River Line, Southerland to Cronulla Lines and others. Nearly all the lines have been closed and have become major bus routes of the city. The olden day trams have been replaced today by the Metro Light Rail. This tram service was inaugurated in the year 1997. It is, in fact, one of the most important and modern public conveyance system of the city. The light rail system runs through different parts of the city including Chinatown, paddy’s Market, Darling Harbor, Sydney Fish Market, Pyrmont Peninsula, the entertainment Center and other areas. A majority of the trams depart from Central Station The trams service ahs a total of 14 stops, each of which are fitted with surveillance cameras. The trams services are available for 24 hours and the one can get a tram after every five or six minutes. The trams have a modern and sleek design and are extremely fast. The tram compartments are air-conditioned and spacious with a passenger capacity of around 200. The Sydney Tram services are bi-directional. They are wheelchair accessible also for the convenience of the disabled passengers. They have modern signaling system and have all the steps to make your journey a safe one. The Sydney trams service is extremely efficient. Traveling in a tram is the most comfortable and economical method of moving around the city.
