Formerly a penal site, Fort Denison Island is located in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales. Fort Denison Island, Sydney is now a major tourist attraction. It has a museum which contains artifacts that go back to the time when the country was inhabited by the aborigines. Fort Denison Island, Sydney: History Before the arrival of the Europeans, the aborigines used the name Mat-te-wan-ye for the island. Governor Philip called the island Rock Island but the island became popularly known by the name Pinchgut, which it got few years later. In the middle of 19th century, the island was equipped with a fort named Fort Denison to protect Sydney Harbour. Fort Denison is modeled on Marcello style of architecture. Fort Denison Island, Sydney: Attractions One of the main attractions in Fort Denison Island's is the Fort built in the island in the wake of the Crimean War. The fort bears a distinctive style of Martello towers. Marcello Towers were defensive forts constructed by the British Empire. The fort is the only one of its kind in Australia and the last one that the British ever made. Today the fort serves as a Harbour Navigation Facility. Heritage tour of Fort Denison Island is conducted daily and receives quite an overwhelming response, especially on the weekends.
