The Holy Trinity church was the first Garrison church that was built in the Australian city of Sydney and the foundation stone of the same was laid in June 1840.The fact that a church needs to be built in that particular place was declared by the first Bishop of Australia on a Tuesday morning and it was after the declaration that things started moving at a breathtaking pace. The then government swung into action and a contractor was appointed to build the church, the people who worked for the church did so under special pay packages. The church also has some interesting aspects to it like the fact that the foundation is laid east- west rather that North-South giving a chance to everyone to catch a glimpse of the inspiring sight of the rising sun. Another interesting fact about the church is that it was consecrated in the millennium year nearly one hundred and sixty years after its foundation was laid. The church in its present form can accommodate nearly six hundred people and is a witness to the times gone by. The church is popularly referred to as the Garrison church though it is officially named as the church of Holy Trinity. The name Garrison church was thus popularized because of the large number of garrison regiments that came to worship in the church. There were some efforts to raise funds to built a tower in the late nineteenth century but unfortunately the funds never materialized and whatever little had been raised was diverted for repairs to the roof of the church. The church has a number of services throughout the year and a concert with the Sydney Welsh Choir has already been held in the month of December last year. The church is also easily accessible as it takes approximately fifteen minutes from the Wynyard station. The Holy Trinity church is located in the corner of Argyle and Lower Fort Street, Millers points and is sandwiched between other important tourist attractions like the Sydney Observatory and the Rocks.
