Macquarie Street forms the eastmost street of Sydney's central business district. It runs from Hyde Park in the south to the Sydney Opera House in the north.

Macquarie Street takes its name from Lachlan Macquarie, who was the Governor of New South Wales from 1810-1821.

Macquarie Street takes the credit for setting about the construction of Sydney's first building for the public. The buildings Sydney Hospital, the Hyde Park Barracks and St. James Church, all of which lie on Macquarie Street are projects belonging to Macquarie Street.

Some of the most important building like the Parliament House, the State Library of the New South Wales, Sydney Mint and the Reserve Bank of Australia lie along Macquarie Street.

Macquarie Street: Attractions

Government House- lies on Macquarie Street, is reminiscent of the Gothic style building. The building never fails to elicit words of admiration from the awed visitors, who cannot stop marveling at the grand structure.

Hyde Park Barracks- was built in the 19th century to house male convicts who were working as government employees. It was designed by Francis Greenway, who also designed Macquarie Lighthouse. Hyde Park Barracks' function as a convict house was terminated in 1848, after which it served as an Immigration Depot for female immigrants.

Sydney Conservatorium of Music- is one of the most renowned music schools in Australia. It commands a lot of respect for the fact that it is one of the oldest in the country. The building of the music school is named the Greenway Building and was construted in 1821. Standing magnificently as it does, the building was once described as a 'palace for horses'. The building lies overlooking the Sydney Harbour and presents an excellent counterpoint of the old and the new.
