St Mary's Cathedral is one of the most important historical structures present in the city of Sydney. St Mary's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church and is the largest of its kind in Australia as well as in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. St Mary's Cathedral is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney. The present holder of this position is the Cardinal Archbishop George Pell.

St Mary's Cathedral was built over a period of approximately 60 years stretching from 1868 till 1928. However, the site on which the St Mary's Cathedral was built previously had St Mary's Chapel (the first Catholic Cathedral of Sydney) located. But unfortunately, this Cathedral was destroyed in fire in the year 1865. It was only after this unfortunate incident that the then Archbishop of Sydney Bede Polding laid the foundation stone in the year 1968 for the new St Mary's Cathedral which is still present in Sydney. Modifications are still made to St Mary's Cathedral and the Spires of the Cathedral were built during 1998 and 2000.

In the year 1930, Pope Pius XI declared St Mary's Cathedral as a Minor Basilica as well. This is a wonderful gothic structure and the twin towers of this Cathedral are marvelous. The twin towers took absolutely extraordinary from the Hyde Park.
