If you are looking for a place to seek refuge from the maddening crowd of Sydney then the ideal place to go is the St Patrick's' Catholic Church in Sydney which was a popular place of worship among the Irish Catholics of the times.
However over the years it has grown popular and served the catholic community of the city of Sydney also.
The church started being functional from the middle of nineteenth century with the first Bishop of Australia having blessed the foundation stone in 1840. Though it is the second Catholic Church in the country of Australia yet it is considered the oldest one as the St Mary's Cathedral was reduced to ashes in a fire.
The effort to build the St Patrick's church started in the 1840's with the Catholics applying for a land at the top of the church hill. However the application was accepted only to the extent of a small grant of money by the government.
The rescue act though was done by a person called Davis who had given land for the church behind the house which enabled the project to go on without a hitch. His generosity didn't end with parting the land, as the elderly person surprised everyone by placing a cheque of a thousand pounds on the foundation stone, which was considered a big amount of money by any estimates.
The building was designed by an architect named John Frederick Hilly who had been inspired by an English model. The construction of the church was allotted was allotted to a company named Andrew Ross and Company with Polding performing the rites of solemn opening on 17th March 1844.
The church has undergone a major transformation in the year 1999 and it has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. The church has some outstanding features like the all imposing high alter which was crafted way back in the end of the nineteenth century. The French connection doesn't quite end there are as a large number of statues have been imported from the early twentieth century.
The Church is conveniently located at 20 Grosvenor Street with the nearest rail station being in Wynyard.
