The parliament or the icon of Democracy can be viewed on the non sitting days and it includes the Legislative Council Chamber which is considered the upper house and the legislative assembly which is considered the lower house. These buildings have been born out of the two wings which have survived from the Rum hospital and the Northern Wing was taken over and converted to house the first parliament of New South Wales. The building was chosen as it was one of the largest buildings available in Sydney at that particular time. A parliamentary chamber for the legislative members was added at the northern end while the chamber for the legislative council was assembled in the middle of the nineteenth century. The second chamber has been shipped from the Glasgow in Scotland and usually consists of pre fabricated cast- iron which, originally meant for church building was diverted to Sydney where it was accommodated as one of the two parliamentary chambers. The place has immense tourism importance and guided tours to the place on the days when the parliament is not in function are regular and one would be shown the Legislative Council Chamber, the Legislative Assembly and the Jubilee room which displays stuff usually related to object pertaining to the parliament and its restoration. The house is open to the general public between 9:00 in the morning to about 5:00 in the evening everyday and it is better to book for group visits in advance, which is not essentially required for a visit by an individual. When the parliament is in session one can see the proceedings from the visitor's galleries while on other days the Chambers are also thrown open to the general public. The place is also disabled friendly as wheel chair facilities can me made available on a pre arrangement. There are even hearing loops in the public gallery of the legislative assembly incase you are interested in the proceedings of the house. So when you are on a sightseeing tour of Sydney you should make an effort to include the Parliament house as it is set among a set of very complex but majestic buildings.
