About the Biennale of Sydney
The Biennale of Sydney creates a forum where freedom of speech and expression is inspired. It was the first to observe the cultural and ethnic diversity of Australia. It showcased endemic art in an international coeval art context. It was the first time in 1973 and 1976 that Asian and contemporary art of the region was exhibited. The festival was the first of its kind which presented to the world the art of social movements that transformed Australian society.
2004 Biennale
The grand Biennale of 2004 was held in several venues around Sydney city like the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artspace, the Botanic Gardens, the Sydney Opera House, and the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay. The theme of the 2004 Biennale was 'On Reason and Emotion'. It showcased the work of various artists from round the globe. The range of media used was broad, with drawing, painting, video, sound, animation, audio, photography and sculptures all forming part of the exhibition.
In the 31 years from 1973 to 2004, the Biennale of Sydney has bestowed 14 critically applauded, favorite and large-scale exhibitions - bringing the work of over 1200 artists from more than 60 countries to Australia.
2006 Biennale
The 2006 Biennale of Sydney was organized around the conceptual framework Zones of Contact from the 8th of June to the 27th of August.
It included 85 artists from 44 countries and collaborations from 57 cities in building it one of the most inspirational, daring and challenging Biennales ever. It was held over 16 venues. Energizing fresh projects was created for specific public sites and outdoor locations and an international program of performances, public talks, symposia and workshops will be held over the duration of the Biennale.
