The festival traces its origin in the year 1978.It began as a protest march against the police and remembrance to the Stonewall riots. In the year 1979, this festival was again held in the year 1979.The event later on adopted a new name that is - Sydney Gay Mardi Gras - In the year 1980 the post parade dance party was introduced for the first time. This event witnessed a large number of people taking part in the parade. In the year 1988 the event was named as the - Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras -

Mardi Gras festival is usually celebrated in the month of February or March every year. The festival usually lasts for four weeks. It is an outdoor event. Mardi Gras festival is the perfect festival to have some fun with friends and family. In this festival you can enjoy music, theatre or even art show.

The main attraction of the Mardi Gras Festival is the parade. The parade is held on the last Saturday of the festival. The parade usually starts at Hyde Park and comes to an end at Moore Park. As soon as the parade concludes the grand party begins. The party usually continues till Sunday morning.

Mardi Gras festival also screens many international and local short and feature films.
