Centennial Park Sydney

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
A well spread parkland in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Centennial Park is located only 4 km away from Sydney central business district. Centennial Park itself functions as a tiny suburb and falls under the local government area of the City of Sydney.

Centennial Park takes into its embrace an area of 2.20 sq. km.

Centennial Park: History

The year 1888 marked the completion of Australia’s 100 years of settlement. Keeping in mind the enormity of the occasion, preparations were begun well in advance. The construction of Centennial Park commenced in 1886.

Sir Henry Parkes who inaugurated the Centennial Park called it 'emphatically the people's park'.

Centennial Park was constructed on the land which had originally been singled out by Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, the Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821, for grazing and watering stock.

The fact that Centennial Park is a well maintained and is most centrally located accounts for the heavy numbers of visitors every day.

Centennial Park: Features

Federation Pavilion
Federation Pavilion served as the venue for the official proclamation of Australia’s independence in January 1901. Exactly a century later in January 2001, the building underwent renovation and its walls resounded with centenary celebrations again.

The Grand Drive
The Grand Drive runs in a circular manner through the park. Owing to its impressive length of 3.8 km, Grand Drive is for used Sydney Marathon Course. It also came of good use during the Sydney Olympics 2000.

McKay Oval

McKay Oval occupies much of the western part of the Centennial Park. It is now the home ground of Sydney Boys High School and is used for rugby, cricket and soccer. McKay Oval was originally a swampy place littered with stones. Soon after being leased to the school, the swamp was drained out and stones cleared.

Centennial Park is considered extremely safe at any time of the day. The park has a 24-hour presence of park rangers, who are on perpetual beat on all parts of the Park.

Most of the people visit Centennial Park for the purpose of picnics, jogging, cycling, musicals, cricket, skating and others.
