Hyde Park is an extensive public park in the eastern flank of the Sydney central business district. Hyde Park’s rectangle shape is outlined by Elizabeth Street in the west, College Street in the East, St. James in the North and Liverpool Street.

Hyde Park: History

Hyde Park takes its name from a park known by a similar name in London. Hyde Park in London is one of the largest parks in Central London. Hyde Park, Sydney has been used by the Australians for recreational purposes since 1792.

Hyde Park began as the city’s first race course and later functioned as a cricket ground for a brief period.

Hyde Park: Features

The most identifiable feature of Hyde Park is the grand Archibald Fountain. The monument was inaugurated in 1932 as a tribute to those Australian soldiers who lost their lives during the Great War in France. Archibald Fountain is regarded as one of the finest public fountains in Australia.

The entire cost of building Archibald Fountain was borne by J.F Archibald, who owned The Bulletin magazine. In accordance to his wish, a Frenchman was hired o design the fountain.

On the southernmost part of Hyde Park, Sydney is the ANZAC War Memorial. It is one of the most important war memorials in Sydney. ANZAC War Memorial was designed by C. Bruce Dellit and reached its completion in 1934.

On the south-eastern part of Hyde Park, near the Oxford Street entry lies a German Gun from SMS Emden.

Lying on the northern end of Hyde Park, in Queens Square are three structures- each one representing the best of Georgian buildings. These building were the creations of the ex-convict Francis Greenway. The majestic presence of Queen Victoria’s statue adorns the center of the Square.

On the western face of the park, there stands an obelisk towering 12 foot from the ground. The obelisk is embellished in the manner of Egyptian figures.
Hyde Park is richly laden with over 580 trees and immaculately laid gardens. Of late, it has come to light that many of the trees have been infected by different kinds of fungi, following which the process of removing the diseased trees have been initiated.
