A suburb in the inner-west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Ashfield is one of the most culturally diverse municipalities in Australia. It is well known for its various shops, parks and reserves. In the recent report it was found that 51% of the 20,700 population of Ashfield were born outside of Australia. On any given day, Ashfield market reveals it multi ethnic homogeneity comprising Indians, Japanese, Chinese, Thai etc. Ashfield has often been called Little Shanghai. Ashfield is mainly a middleclass suburb, with a large portion of the populace being a transient one. The architecture of Ashfield is dominated by typically Victorian structures. The Europeans first appeared on this part of the territory in 1788, before which the region was inhabited by the Wangal Aborigines. The first white person to settle in Ashfield was also the colony's first Surveyor-General Baron Augustus Alt, who was granted the land in 1794. By the late 19th century, Ashfield had completed the transformation into a fashionable suburb, with many people moving in from the Eastern Suburbs. The tram service became operational from 1890s to 1948. Ashfield's main shopping centre is along Liverpool Road and around Ashfield railway station. Out of Ashfield's numerous parks, Ashfield Park is the most picturesque. It is lined with beautiful Phoenix palms, a statue of Mary Poppins and a war memorial. Ashfield is located not further than 10 kilometres from Sydney central business district. It can be reached within few minutes from Sydney's Central Station. Ashfield is also close to Iron Cove in Sydney Harbour. Iron Cove is known for its cycling and jogging tracks. Ashfield railway station lies along the lines of Inner West line of the CityRail network. The roads- Liverpool Road and Parramatta Road lie near Ashfield.
