A suburb in Sydney's Lower North Shore, Castle Cove lies on the western flank of Middle Harbour in the City of Willoughby. Middle Harbour is the name by which the northern arm of Port Jackson is called. Castle Cove is famous among the visitors for the magnificent views that it affords; it is also known to be notoriously expensive compared to other places in Willoughby. Castle Cove is bordered by Middle Harbour in the North and east; towards the south lie the suburb of Castlecrag, the Camp Creek and Eastern Valley Way and Boundary Street in the west. Castle Cove: History It is commonly believed that Castle Cove takes its name from a castle named Innisfallen Castle, which was built in 1905 and belonged to Henry Willis, a Member of Parliament of New South Wales. It was not until 1858 that land grants commenced in the area. The development in the area was sluggish and extremely discouraging during initial stages. The much needed momentum came later in the mid-twentieth century. The uniqueness of Castle Cove came under a threat in the mid 1980's when NSW Roads and Traffic Authority came up with a proposal of extending Warringah Freeway. The proposal was greeted with large protest from of people of Castle Cove, in the wake of which the plans had to be abandoned. The inheritors of the castle from Henry Willis wanted to divide the land around the castle for the construction of town houses and also use the town for wedding. The plans too fell by the wayside since the land around the castle had been given to its owners for the beautification of the castle. Castle Cove is wonderfully placed on the bend of Great Ocean Road at Glenaire. The beaches are not recommended for swimming, yet are famous for the beauty of the landscapes they overlook.
Castle Cove has proved to be of great help to the archeologists. It is the place where dinosaur fossils were found. Some of the widely visited places in Castle Cove are- Garden and Recreation Reserve, Harold Reid Reserve, H C Press Park, H D Robb Reserve and Willis Park, Castle Cove Park, Explosives Reserve.
