A suburb in the City of Parramatta in western Sydney, Parramatta is often called Sydney's - second central business district - . Parramatta is located only 25 kilometers away from Sydney central business district. Westfield Parramatta, a shopping center in Parramatta, is the largest of the kind in Australia. Parramatta: History Founded in the same year as Sydney in 1788, Parramatta was originally inhabited by the Darug people. The Darugs used to call the area Baramada or Burramatta. Food was considered abundant in the area, with the forest and the river being the ever replenishing source.
In January 1788 Governor Arthur Philip decided to lay off his wearisome hunt for a prospective site for a settlement when he narrowed down on Parramatta. He decided to build a farm here with the help of thousand convicts. The name Parramatta comes from the Darug word- Baramada, which means 'the place where the eels lie down'. Governor Arthur Philip had himself built a small house on the picturesque Rose Hill and a second one in 1799. The second house was used as a retreat by Governors who followed later till 1850s. The house, now called 'Old Government House', is still extant and is held as the oldest surviving pubic building in Australia. Parramatta: At Present Parramatta is fulfilling its new found responsibility ushered by the new millennium as a government center. Parramatta now houses NSW Police Headquarters, which was previously in Sydney's CBD.
Many private enterprises, burdened by the rocketing real estate rates in Parramatta, are shifting their offices to Parramatta.
There are many undertakings in operation now, especially in the railway transportation, which are aimed at making Parramatta more accessible to the rest of the country. Parramatta: Places of Interest Parramatta Park Lying next to Parramatta Stadium, Parramatta Park is in every respect a sprawling park. The history of the park is inextricably intertwined with that of Parramatta. This was once the compound of Arthur Philip, the first Governor of Parramatta and it also has Old Government House. Parramatta Park also has a natural amphitheatre on one of the bends in the river called 'the Crescent'. The name was given by Governor Philip. Westfield Parramatta Westfield Parramatta is the largest shopping center in Australia. It has nearly 600 shops. Lake Parramatta Lake Parramatta is beautiful water body which is surrounded by nature at its most verdant self. It is considered a fun recreational site. Westfield Parramatta is frequently visited by celebrities. Church Street Church Street is a fun place to visit for it is lined with number of restaurants, catering various cuisines from around the world. Church Street takes its name from St. John's Anglican Cathedral, which lies opposite to the Town Hall.
