Pittwater, Sydney: History

Pittwater became a European settlement in 1788. In 1800 Governor Philip, the first governor of the new colony, named it after the incumbent British prime minister, William Pitt the Younger.

Only a few years after it was founded, Pittwater's importance grew as a port, which was equipped with all the amenities needed for loading and unloading goods. Pittwater's growth into an important commercial port in the likes Sydney Harbour was marred by its shallow entrance.

The Newport Arms Hotel- The reason for the popularity of the hotels extends beyond its cozy bar and breathtaking views it offers, but for the fact that it was constructed during the early years of Pittwater as a colony. The construction of the hotel dates back to 1880.

The Basin- It is a part of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It is formed of a narrow inlet in the western flank of Pittwater.

The Basin is a wonderful place for a refreshing swim; there is provision for barbeque as well.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse- The lighthouse was constructed to avert the rising incidence of shipwrecks in the area. Barrenjoey Lighthouse is located about twenty minutes climb from a beach in Pittwater. The lighthouse was designed by James Barnet and many claim that it can be seen 40 km from the sea.
