Pitt Street Mall, Sydney is a major shopping area in the city. Pitt Street Mall basically refers to that section of Pitt Street meant for the pedestrians. It is located in the heart of the central business district of Sydney and is one of the busiest areas of the city. This street is situated between Market Street and King Street. Pitt Street Mall became famous as a result of the publicity that it gained from the Free Hugs Campaign that was held in the year 2006. The video of the campaign was posted on YouTube. Today, it has thus emerged as one of the major shopping and tourist destinations of the city. This small area of the city is filled with a large number of shopping malls and departmental stores. In fact, one can find a large number of flagship chain stores of numerous brands and companies in this popular shopping zone. One of the most famous chain stores that one can find over here is Myers. There are a total of around 600 speciality stores in this tiny little stretch. Pitt Street Mall, Sydney is the main shopping center of the city. Rents of the floor space are pretty high in this place, often going up to nearly $8000 per square meter. Not only is it the highest in the city but also the fifth highest in the whole world, in terms of city streets. One can find a large number of shops over here selling gift items, fashion accessories, home décor, souvenirs, designer clothes and other articles. You can also find a large number of international as well as Australian designed brands over here. A major area of the street is occupied by some of the most famous shopping malls of the city like Westfield Centrepoint, Glasshouse, Imperial Arcade, Skygarden, Mid City Center and Westfield Sydney Central Plaza as well as the Strand Arcade. However, in the year 2005 the management of a major part of the retail space in this street was taken over by Westfield, after the acquisition of the Sydney Central Plaza, Imperial Arcade and the management rights of Skygarden. One of the biggest features of this place is that one can find a large number of street performers and musicians entertaining the shoppers and the pedestrians. One can also find a large number of restaurants and cafes on this busy shopping area. Pitt Street Mall, Sydney is one a cosmopolitan area of the city. With its numerous shopping arcades, street performers and cafes it has emerged as one off the major attractions and shopping destinations of the city.
