The Maritime Museum of Townsville is popular for the display of the SS Yongala ship that sunk in the south of Townsville in 1911 killing the 122 on board. In the museum the bow complex reflects the maritime nature of the museum; the broad walk links the different buildings of the museums reminding one of the ships deck.
At the Maritime Museum of Townsville the display includes the video recording of the discovery of the wreck. The other display is the Women's War 2 that highlights the life of women in the World War II in Townsville, the history of Townsville, information about the Royal Australian Navy and hardhat diving industry.
In the gallery section one can get to see the models of different boats and ships that are made both from the scratch and some from early kits. Here there are over forty hands built model of ships and some of them have been donated by the local boat builders.
At the Maritime Museum of Townsville there is facility for private functions and a BBQ area that is well equipped. Here one can also find a bookshop and coffee shop. Those interested to know more about the maritime history should not miss out on this unique museum.
