King Fahd Causeway in Bahrain connects the large city of Khobar which is also called al-Khobar or even al-Khubar in the royal kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the island nation of Bahrain. King Fahd is actually a multiple dike bridge combination whose construction was started in 1982. The foundation stone of King Fahd Causeway in Bahrain, a joint venture between these two neighboring countries was laid by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and Sheikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa of Bahrain. The project took more than four years to be completed and when it was opened for use of general people on November 25, 1986; the bridge was hailed as one of the technical marvels of the modern engineering.
King Fahd Causeway in Bahrain is actually a combination of several bridges and dams. Financed completely by the government of Saudi Arabia, the project was outsourced to a Netherlands based construction company-the Ballast Nedam Group. The four lane road stretches up to 25 kilometers. The five bridges that were completed under this project had a combined length of 12,430 meters. This huge stretch of roads was completed with 350,000 cubic meters of concrete and 147,000 metric tons of heavy duty reinforced steel.
King Fahd Causeway in Bahrain actually consists of three parts. One of the three bridges extends from Khobar to the man made island of Saudi Arabia close to the Bahrain border. Another one straddles from this artificial island to the Umm-al-Nasan island and the third bridge joins Umm-al-Nasan to the main island of Bahrain.
