Most part of Bahrain is covered by desert. The immediate two neighbors of the country are Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Though separated from the Arabian neighbors by the Persian Gulf, the King Fahd Causeway in Bahrain connects Bahrain with Saudi Arabia. Located strategically at Riffa, the Riffa Fort in Bahrain is considered among some of the best places for Sightseeing in Bahrain. Riffa Fort in Bahrain is one of the most popular sightseeing locales in this country. The fort is located in the city of Riffa. Riffa served as the centre of power until 1869. The city of Riffa is located almost in the heart of the island of Bahrain. Divided into two parts, namely east and west-the cities are the two largest ones in the Southern Governorate. Riffa Fort in Bahrain was built in the year 1812. From this sandstone fort, the present Bahrain Amir's great grandfather, Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa ruled the kingdom of Bahrain from 1869 to 1932. He was a powerful Amir and during his able reign, this city flourished in leaps and bounds. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa's house in Muharraq offers a glimpse of the royal pomp and grandeur in the 19th century Bahrain. The architecture of the house is stunningly beautiful. Wall carvings too bear testimony to the skill of the adept craftsmen. Inside of the Riffa Fort in Bahrain is quite spacious. This fort was divided into separate chambers that housed the Amir's army and the royal family as well. The fort is complete with water reservoir and good drainage system. Strategically located, this fort even to this day is important in terms of the national security of Bahrain. Surrounded by desert, this fort is one of the best places to feel the intensity of the wind that blows over the desert sand at night.
