Phnom Penh is the largest, most populous and the capital city of Cambodia. In the 1920s, it was known as the Pearl of Asia. & Art Gallery. It is the Sovanna Phum Theatre & Art Gallery in Phnom Penh
which was created in 1994 to give Khmer artists the opportunity to perform their
art and to make a living. Sovanna Phum means Golden Era and is an independent
Khmer art association. The aim of the Sovanna Phum Theatre & Art Gallery at
Phnom Penh is to revive, preserve and promote the treasures of Khmer culture
to local and international audiences. Since 1997, Sovanna Phum has been executing,
implementing and spreading information, awareness, prevention and education
exhibition on specific subjects (health, education, AIDS, environment, human
rights).
Sovanna Phum encourages exchange of valuable tools to promote and enrich the
Khmer culture and and develop solidarity amongst the artists. Today it has a
dynamic network of 120 professional artists. The Khmer culture incorporating
Shadow Puppet Theater, Classical Dance, Folk Dance, Traditional Music, Theater
and Circus has witnessed a fine revival and promotion through the artists at
Sovanna Phum Theatre & Art Gallery in Phnom Penh.
Sovanna Phum has performances every Friday & Saturday at 7.30pm at its theater. The performances include Shadow Theater, classical and folkloric dance, theater, traditional music, circus and new performance creations. Sovanna Phum sells small and large shadow puppets, musical instruments, masks etc. People are invited to visit the puppet workshops which operates daily (except Sunday) from 8am - 5pm at the theater. Special performances are arranged for anniversaries, parties, conferences, tourist groups etc. Sovanna Phum can also provide with its own infrastructures: stage, truck, artistic and equipments. With the construction of its new stage, Sovanna Phum now provides space to the Cambodian people for tying-up with their culture. It also allows the foreigners to discover the rich heritage and diversity of Khmer performing arts. The theater building located in a popular street of Phnom Penh has been just revamped. The Sovanna Phum Theatre & Art Gallery in Phnom Penh is one of the major attractions of Phnom Penh.
