The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh is an entire complex that was begun to be built by King Norodom during the time when the capital city was being moved to Phnom Penh. Most of the buildings in the complex were completed before the commencement of the World War I and it was built in collaboration with the Thai designers and architects and the French administrators. The Royal Palace of Phnom Penh in the Khmer language is known as the Preah Barom Reachea Vaeng Chaktomuk. It was occupied by the Kings of the land of Cambodia but they left the palace when there internal problems during and after the rule of the Khmer Rouge. The attractions of the Royal Palace at Phnom Penh The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh has got three main complexes and these are the the Silver Pagoda on the north, the Khemarin Palace to the south west and a central compound that houses the Throne Hall. - The Throne Hall- this was considered to be the - Sacred Seat of Judgement - and it is here that the royal officials, generals and the king's confidants carried on their responsibilities and duties. It contains the royal throne and the busts of the rulers of Cambodia. - The Silver Pagoda- this is an important part of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh Cambodia and it contains numerous statues of the Buddha both the bejeweled ones and also those made of gold. This Silver Pagoda is inlaid with more than 5,000 silver tiles. - Khemarin Palace- this was used as a residence by the King of Cambodia and the most attractive feature is the single spired prang. - The Chan Chhaya Pavilion- it is also known as the Moonlight Pavilion and tourists as well as the local people assemble here to see the performances of the Khmer Classical dances. The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh has undergone a lot of reconstruction and it is now a major aspect of Sightseeing in Phnom Penh. Visitors are allowed move around the Throne Hall and the Silver Pagoda but they are not allowed to enter the Khemarin Palace complex.
