The Sihanoukville Airport is situated at a distance of about 17 kilometer to the east of the town of Sihanoukville, on the border of Ream National Park. Also famous as Kang Keng Airport, Sihanoukville Airport is the third International Airport of Cambodia. From Sihanoukville Airport shuttle flights are available thrice a week between Sihanoukville and Siem Reap. This airport is under the supervision of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation and the airport operations are looked after by Ariston Holdings. Sihanoukville is fast gaining popularity and is now being visited by a number of tourists from around the world every year. As the tourism industry is developing so is the transport route to this small picturesque town. The Airport at Sihanoukville was first built in 1960 with the help from Soviet Union. It was not in operation for long and it has opened again recently. The Sihanoukville Airport is now a very new and contemporary building. Airport at Sihanoukville is developing and more and more facilities are being offered. Additional services are also facilitated for the customs, passenger terminal and immigration facilities. The length of the airport's runway is about 1,300 meters and the width is around 34 meters. It is made and maintained in such a way that different types of aircrafts, multi-engine and turbo-props like the ATR-72 and AN-24 can land and take-off smoothly. However, the airport authority is planning to extend the runway by 2,200 meters so that it can suffice larger jet planes. There are plans that the five parking zones on the runway opposite to the new terminal building will soon be in use. The air traffic control at the Sihanoukville Airport will be offered by Cambodian Air Traffic Services which has its center in Phnom Penh and also from the control tower situated above the new terminal. The airport authority aims at further developing the Sihanoukville Airport by using improved technologies for the convenience of the passengers.
