Beijing Planetarium

China - Xian - Beijing - Guangzhou - Chengdu - Dalian - Shenzhen - Shanghai - Hangzhou
As you go sightseeing in Beijing, make sure that you drop in for a visit at the Beijing Planetarium. The very first of its kind in China, the Beijing Planetarium was built in 1957 and has ever since been trying to do justice to the common man's curiosity about the universe and its workings.

The cupola of the Beijing Planetarium is a huge one, measuring 23.5 meters in diameter. Visitors to the planetarium can enjoy 45-minute presentations that take them on a journey through the cosmos and the various mysteries it holds in its fold. Held at regular intervals, these presentations are a great way to enhance one's knowledge. Children simply love it.

With the assistance of projectors installed at the center of the hall, an image of a starlit sky is reproduced in the cupola for the awe struck audience as it is taken through the presentation.

A visit to the Beijing Planetarium will also allow you to have a good look at the two astronomical observatories in the courtyard of the complex. One of the observatories houses a telescope that measures 13 centimeters in diameter. It is really interesting to observe planets, stars and the moon through this powerful telescope. School children can especially look forward to this part.

To the west of the Beijing Planetarium, there is an astronomy square complete with a variety of astronomical instruments for visitors to have a look at. It also needs to be mentioned that the Beijing Planetarium has its own magazine named the Astronomy Fan. It also manages the Trade Edition Astronomical Calendar magazine in collaboration with the Purple Mountain Observatory.

The Ancient Observatory of is also under the management of the Beijing Planetarium in China. Built in 1442 AD, this observatory showcases astronomical instruments that date back to the days of the Ming Dynasty.
