Built in honor of Sun Yat-sen, who is considered by many as the "Father of modern China", Zhongshan Park is worth a visit during Tours to Beijing. About 1,000 years ago, Zhongshan Park was known as the Temple of National Prosperity. It was under the Yuan Dynasty, the name of the temple was changed to the Temple of Longevity & National Prosperity. Ming Emperor Yongle built the Altar of Land and Grain in this Park in the year 1421. Later in 1914, the altar was renamed as Central Park and was opened for the general public on 10th October. Finally it was renamed as Zhongshan Park in honor of Sun Yat-sen in the year 1928. Get to know more about Zhongshan Park during Sightseeing in Beijing.
After entering the main southern entrance, you will enter a large vestibular pavilion comprising long corridors and an archway. Towards the east lies a beautiful specimen of Taihu Lake stone known as "a slice of dark clouds". Apart from it there is a peony pond, cypresses and a number of trees. Towards the southern side lies a greenhouse with a display of fresh flowers. Towards the north is the Altar of Land and Grain. You are sure to fall in love wit the natural beauty as expressed in this area of Zhongshan Park.
Moving further towards the east of the altar you will find the Pavilion of the Pines and Cypresses and a tall rockery. Further south of this place is a Kiosk meant for meeting New Friends (Laijinyuxuan), feast on some refreshments there. Finally towards the west of the Altar of Land & Grain is the most beautiful and liveliest part of the park. One really wonders is this less than the Garden of Eden! Thatched pavilions, teahouse, restaurant and a children's playground along with an amusement park are what make this area picture perfect.
