The temple, which largely remained unnoticed, was reopened for the public in 1999. The temple was built in 1322 by the devotees of Zhengyi sect and it was dedicated to the Dong Yue God. It is believed that Dong Yue looks after the hordes of tourists visiting this temple and also supervises the 18 layers of Hell and the 76 departments.
There are 72 halls in the temple that ring the main courtyard of the temple. The worshipers visit the relevant hall, with offerings in the form of money, incense, and red tokens that has their names inscribed on it.
The temple opens on all days expect Tuesday from 8 in the morning to 4:30 in the evening. Dong Yue Miao can be reached easily by metro rail. The nearest station is Chaoyang Men (212, exit B). The entry fee charged is $ 1.25 and during festivals the temple has a free entry.
