Lama Temple, Beijing, also known as 'Yonghegong' or 'Palace of Peace and Harmony' is located in the northeast part of Beijing city. Built in 1694, the Lama Temple, Beijing comprises of five large halls and courtyards with beautiful archways. Witness the abundance of Buddhist art forms along with the Tibetan-style murals in the Lama Temple Beijing. Formerly, the Lama Temple was the residence of Prince YIN Zhen, (Yongzheng), the son of Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty.
When Yongzheng came to the throne in 1723, he turned half of the residence in an imperial palace and the second half in to a monastery for Buddhist and Mongolian Monks that can be seen till date in the Lama Temple. History says that after the prince's death in 1735, his coffin was placed inside this temple. This temple is now a famous Tibetan Monastery.
The architecture of the Lama Temple won't fail to enchant you during your sightseeing in Beijing. Facing the south is the main gate and attached with its axis are five halls as mentioned before. The halls are namely, Tianwangdian, the Palace of the Heavenly King, Yonghegong, the Hall of Harmony and Peace, Yongyoudian, Hall of Eternal Blessing, Falundian, the Hall of the Wheel of the Law and Wanfuge, the Pavilion of the Eternal Happiness. All these halls have a Buddha. The fifth hall is the one housing the largest Buddha out the five that stands 5 feet high.
