Heshen was an intelligent and handsome young man, who was a member of the imperial guard. Heshen came to the notice of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong (1736-1796) and soon was promoted to positions that are usually held by the experienced officials. Heshen occupied the position of controlling finance and the appointment of civil servants and in the process acquired great wealth. Though old king Qinglong did not do anything to stop Heshen's corruption, his descendant Emperor Jiaqing (1796-1820) executed Heshen and his property. Thereby, the mansion was passed on to Prince Qing in 1799. And finally, Emperor Xianfeng (1851-1862) transferred the ownership to Prince Gong.
