Chengdu Overview

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province of south-west China, is a sub-provincial city. Chengdu lies in the centre of the fertile Chengdu Plain. The entire city is spread across a surface area of 12.3 thousand square kilometers or 4749 square miles. The city is mainly divided into five administrative districts and twelve counties. Agricultural activities in Chengdu have earned it the title of `Land of Milk and Honey'.

To get a Chengdu overview, we must consider the history of the city. It dates back to the early parts of the fourth century BC. About some four thousand years back, the region of Chengdu witnessed the establishment of the prehistoric Bronze Age culture of Jinsha. It has gone through the rulings of the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Northern Song Dynasty, Ming Dynasty etc.

The city of Chengdu has always been one of the premier hubs of traditional Chinese art and culture. Chengdu finds a mention among the first twenty four cultural and historical cities that have been approved by the state. The city of Chengdu is also home to twenty three cultural relic units of the province and state. All these have made Chengdu one of the top tourist destinations in China. The weather of Chengdu is wonderful during the springs. Huanglongxi Ancient Town, Sanxingdui, Huanglong, Jiuzhaigou, the national parks, gardens and museums make Chengdu a wonderful place to visit. It only reinforces the popular saying that once you come to Chengdu, you will not want to leave.
