Transportation in Chengdu

The chief mode of transportation in Chengdu for its people is the bicycle. The other common modes of transportation in Chengdu consist of taxis, buses, pedicabs, bikes and boat services.

Bus: A single bus ride, whatever be the length of distance costs 1¥ or 2¥. You need to pay the fare if you want to change buses since there are no transfer tickets. There are frequent bus services but the buses often change their routes. The buses are in fact very crowded so you should be aware of your own belongings. In Chengdu there are two major bus stations. From Xinnanmen bus station the buses go to all the destinations in and around Sichuan excepting the north. The buses which goes to the north departs from the Ximen bus station in the northwest of the city.

Taxi: You will see several new taxi stands on the streets of Chengdu.The Taxis are comparatively cheap from the other modes of transportation in Chengdu. For the first 3 kilometers it charges CNY 5 and CNY 1.4 every succeeding kilometers from 6.00-22.00. On the other hand at night, from 22.00-6.00, for the first 3 kilometers CNY 6 is charged. A charge of CNY 1.7 is taken for every succeeding kilometer.

Cycle: The Cycle is the primary mode of transportation in Chengdu. Almost each and every student has their own bicycles. All the major streets and businesses have bicycle lanes to park cycles. But then the lanes are constantly somewhat clogged. While riding
One should try and keep to the left, cross with others when the light is on and thus not to get hit in the process.

Bike: Given the flat terrain of Chengdu, transportation in Chengdu by bikes is easy and quicker. While you return to collect your bike a fee of 2 jiao-0.2 rmb has to be paid. It is a good idea to always lock your bike when leaving it at bike parks.

Boat: Transportation in Chengdu by boat is not available since the city is not directly accessible by the boat services.
