Located at the southern suburb of Chengdu, Wuhou Memorial Temple has been dedicated
to Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang was the epitome of a person of great character paired
up with sharp brain. This temple at Chengdu is the most famous out of the temples
that had been built as a memorabilia of Zhuge Liang. The Wuhou Memorial Temple
spreads over an expanse of 37000 square meters or 398,277 square feet. The date
of its establishment is not confirmed. One can make an idea of its date of establishment
from the proximity that it has to the temple of Liu Bei. Probably it was built
during the reign of Liu Bei the emperor of Shu. The temple was renovated in the
year 1672.
The beauty of Wuhou Memorial Temple is enhanced by old cypress trees
and classical red walls surrounding it on all sides. The main body of the temple
is divided into five sections, the Gate, the Second Gate, the Hall of Liu Bei,
the Corridor, and the Hall of Zhuge Liang. Inside are clay sculptures of the
emperor of Shu and his ministers that make for a special feature.
The most valuable cultural relic of Wuhou Memorial Temple is a stele which
is 367-centimeters (144-inch) high and 95-centimeters (37-inch) wide and is
called the Triple-Success Stele. One of the successes stand for an article written
by Pei Du, a famous minister of the Tang dynasty. He served four consecutive
emperors in succession. The second one for calligraphy by Liu Gongquan who was
one of the finest calligraphers in Chinese history. The statement about the
morality and achievement of Zhuge Liang is the third success that has been represented.
A visit to Wuhou Memorial Temple will enlighten us on the amazing personality
of Zhuge Liang. The temple highlights his charming personality, his dedicated
service to the people as well as his remarkable intelligence.
