The city of Chengdu lies amidst the fertile plains of the western Sichuan province
in China. Since the land is fertile and agricultural produce abundant Chengdu
is sometimes called The Land of Abundance and the "Land of Milk and Honey".
Chengdu and the Sichuan province are probably most known for its famous Sichuan
cuisine. Chengdu is thus the best place to try out authentic Sichuan cuisine.
In fact you will probably end up doing more than just trying it out. You might
just be compelled to prolong your stay here, just to sample more of this delightful
cuisine that you are bound to fall in love with.
If you have had Sichuan food only outside China- those with copious amounts
of red food coloring and some kind of spicy sauce then the real Sichuan food
will more than just surprise you. The Sichuanese style of cooking has an unparalleled
flavor that is a fantastic blend of subtle and not so subtle tasting ingredients.
When we say not so subtle, we mean mostly chili and it would be wise to keep
a bottle of peanut milk handy to neutralize the burn of chili.
One of the best places to sample this kind of fare is the Gingko Restaurant
in Chengdu. This restaurant has a sophisticated décor and its food
is simply delicious. The bar area has a comfortable seating arrangements with
plush chairs and couches. The environment is elegant and upscale and this is
one of those places you need to dress up to dine. The dining table looks very
inviting and has a nice view of the river and is perfect for a quite leisurely
meal. Two of Gingko Restaurant's best house specialties are: a mouthwatering
preparation of king crab steamed with peppercorns (jiaozi zheng guiyu) for ¥128
($16) and crispy beef tenderloin (supi niuliu) for ¥48 ($6).
