Are you bored of Chinese food in Chengdu? Do you want to miss home food? Are in the mood for a hearty western meal and steaks and pies for desserts? If yes, then Grandma's Kitchen in Chengdu is just right for you. The restaurant's interiors are decorated in a style reminiscent of quaint seaside cafés in New England. Farm-style chandeliers, wall lamps, straight back wooden chairs and gingham cushions give this two storied restaurant a decidedly warm and homey air. And yes! The place does have an "authentic" grandma. Grandma's Kitchen is an extension of three cafes. That it is tremendously popular with locals and tourists alike is evident from the fact that this restaurant was packed even during the SARS crisis. The club sandwich with its perfectly buttered bread is said to really good and will remind you of sandwiches from your favorite deli. Sandwiches will set you back by about 15 to 25 Yens. The truly delicious entrees are a little more expensive (but still pretty affordable) at about 40 to 120 Yens. The menu includes fried chicken, variety of steaks. And it is said that the steaks are to die for. The hamburgers are truly Texas-sized and the delicious milkshakes are so thick that you could probably balance your spoon on them. The perfectly caramelized apple pie with just the right hint of cinnamon, too, will go down as easy as an apple pie! Tuna fish pizza is…well, as iffy as it sounds. And so we recommend that you avoid this particular dish unless you are feeling really experimental. The mouthwatering pies and desserts are made at Grandma's Deli, next door to the Kehua Bei Lu premises, who's USP is sandwiches and homemade desserts. Grandma's has a homey feeling with its tiny libraries of donated English-language paperbacks that make you feel like curling up in a corner on a rainy day with a nice milkshake and pie and writing postcards.
