Gansu, Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces of China are the premier locations where pandas inhabit. Today in China, there are hardly 1000 pandas, about 80% of which are concentrated within Sichuan. Chengdu, being the capital of Sichuan, is home to the internationally acclaimed Panda Breeding and Research Center.
The Panda Breeding and Research Center is located on Futou Hill in the northern suburbs of Chengdu. From downtown Chengdu, the Panda Breeding and Research Center is at a distance of about 10 kilometers. The center opened for visitors at 7-30A.M and can be viewed till 6P.M. The entry fee to this protected panda habitat is 30 Chinese Yuan. A couple of hours in the panda research base are a great way to see this wonderful animal in their natural habitat.
The Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is spread over a sprawling area of 92 acres. 96% of this area is lush green, providing the wild inmates an environment that is tailor-made to suit their natural habitation. Besides lesser pandas and Giant pandas, visitors can watch more than 20 species of rare animals including white storks, black-necked cranes and so on. There is vast plantation of bamboo trees (main diet of a panda), variety of flowers and a vast range of fauna.
In addition to all these, there is a thematic museum in the form of Giant Panda
Museum. The Giant Panda Hall, Vertebrate Hall and the Butterfly Hall are also
worth a visit.
