New Year's Day is a special occasion on every part of the world. First
observed some 4000 years back in Babylon, it is the oldest celebration of all
the holidays. Although the day has no astronomical and agricultural significance,
it is still celebrated with a lot of ecstasy and pleasure. Like other parts of
the world, the New Year's Day in China is widely celebrated.
Observed on the 1st of January every year, this day is celebrated with a lot
of élan on all parts of China. The streets are brightly lightened and
crowded with people. Family members gather together for homely parties. Few
even visit night clubs and discotheques. But in China, the tradition is to stay
at home with all your family members. Special New Year dishes are prepared like
dumplings, chicken, and fish which are believed to bring good luck. Cakes, puddings
and a few other sweet dishes are a must in the menu during the New Year.
Shopping is also an inevitable part of the New Years celebration in China.
Every member of the family from children to the elder members all dresses up
in bright colored clothes. Gifting flowers is regarded as the best way to greet
people.
