Located in the southern part of Fujian Province, Xiamen sprawls over an area of
1516 square kilometers. With a population of 1150000, the city serves as the economic
capital of this region. Located near the sea, Xiamen's average temperature is
20.8 degree centigrade. Xiamen has a monsoon type of climate.
The industrial sector of Xiamen consists of electron, textile, clothes, food,
and chemicals industries. Electron and cigarette industries do the maximum production
in China. The other well known industries include: Drinks, leather goods, chemical
fibre, electric appliances, and instruments. The agricultural sector of Xiamen
grows grains, peanut, sugar cane, tea, and fruits.
The Xiamen harbor connects Singapore, Japan, Macaw, and several other countries.
Passenger and cargo ships travel to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The
city is also very well connected to the rest of the country by air, road, and
railway services.
Shopping Destinations - Xiamen has some fabulous shopping destinations.
Gulangyu Dragon Head Road has several handicrafts, calligraphy and painting,
and department stores located on both sides of the street. The Zhongshan Road
is the busiest street with large architectural complexes. The specialty of the
street is that it is located around the sea. Hundreds department stores, restaurants,
and theaters fill the street making it an absolute buzzing place. There are
endless array of souvenirs around the Xiahe Road. This street is filled with
large commercial shopping canters. Bailuzhou Shopping and Recreation City and
Dafeng Commercial Mansions are the two other famous shopping destinations of
Xiamen.
Special Souvenirs of Xiamen - The specialties of Xiamen include Qixiandiao,
which is a lacquer filament carving. Traditional subjects like dragon, phoenix,
(Chinese) unicorn, cloud, water, and lotus are carved out of this lacquer filament.
Pearl Embroidery is also very famous in Xiamen. You can also buy crunchy peanut
cakes. These slightly sweet tasted cakes melt in the mouth in a flick of a second.
Xiamen's Special Delicacies - Fotiaoqiang is a traditional dish of the
Min cuisine. The crispy Spring Rolls, stuffed with chicken, sea food, and vegetables
are especially delicious. Youcong fruit is eaten with Shacha sauce, orange juice,
mashed garlic, and sour turnip is a wonderful titillating device of your hunger.
Xiamen's special flavor is the Meat Zongzi, which is dumplings made of glutinous
rice, shaped like a pyramid, and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. Lastly but
not the least, the stirred fried noodle tastes sinful and you would actually
want to consume more once you eat it.
