The Dalian Spring Fireworks Festival is apart of the Spring Festival which is perhaps the biggest holiday in China and is celebrated during the beginning of the Lunar New Year. The festival is usually held during the months of January or February. Most offices and workplaces are closed during the festival and it is this time of the year when most Chinese go back top their homes to celebrate the occasion with their families. Most Chinese homes and shops are beautifully decorated with red lanterns and with red paper which convey festival greetings. Some of the hallmarks of the Spring Festival are food and fireworks. It is tradition in China to prepare more food for the family than could possibly be eaten during the festival. Fireworks and firecrackers are lit to scare away a fierce some dragon according to popular Chinese myth. The people undertake this challenge with great gusto. During the festival week, you will hear the sounds of firecrackers exploding constantly during the day and night only dying down during the wee hours of the night. There are major fireworks displays that are organized every night in Dalian. Most communities would also organize fireworks display and you can come across 5-10 different types of display every night. After the end of the Spring Festival, there is an evening called the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is also marked by fireworks, even more than the spring festival. The people of China have a lot of spirit and are not dampened by the excesses of the Spring Festival. The people burst firecrackers with much gusto as before. It becomes difficult to walk down the streets during the Lantern Festival since long strings of fire crackers are thrown all over the pavement. The biggest danger is certainly the noise and not the sparks. Once a big firecracker goes off, it would leave your years ringing for a while.
