Dalian is surrounded by the Northeast Plain to the north and the Shandong peninsular to the south. The city is spread over an area of 12574 square kilometers, of which about 2415 square kilometers comes under the old city. The coastline of Dalian is about 1906 kilometers long. The coastline of Dalian is surrounded by the peninsula of Liaodong and nearly 260 islands and reefs. The city administration of Dalian consists of three county-level cities, six districts and the county of Changhai. The county level cities are Wa Fangdian, Pu Landian and Zhuanghe. The districts are Ganjingzi, Lüshunkou, Xigang, Zhongshan, Shahekou and Jinzhou. The districts have further been divided into 74 sub-districts and 127 town/townships.
The location of Dalian is mainly among mountains. There is a real dearth of plain lands, and the city is home to numerous hills and mountains. The Qianshan Mountain range of Chang Baishan Mountain system stretches across north to south of the region. Most of the region is donned by rough mountains. The topography of Dalian bears clear indication of sea erosion. Lowlands are quite irregular to be seen and do not form a significant part of the topography. The terrain of the city tends to be broader on the north, and as you walk down to the south, it gets lower and narrower.
