Watching your favorite film in a nice cinema hall is probably the best way to spend your leisure time. Located on Huaihai Zhong Lu Road, the Cathay Cinema in Shanghai is a good place to be entertained.
First opened in January, 1932-the Cathay Cinema is one of the very few Art Deco style cinemas that are still surviving in modern Shanghai. Till 1949, this cinema hall used to screen only American and English films. But from the second half of the 20 th century, Chinese films also started to be screened along with English and Hollywood films.
Until 2003, the Cathay Cinema in Shanghai had only one screen. However, the dawn of 2003 saw a massive renovation of this cinema hall as it was converted into a multiplex. With 2 more screens being added, this cinema hall now has three separate auditoriums. The sound system has also been revamped with surround sound and DTS facility. Designated as a four star cinema hall, Cathay Cinema in Shanghai exhibits blockbuster films at a reasonable price.
With only 225, 236 and 123 seats in the three separate halls, there are a total of 584 seats in this multiplex. The seats are however comfortable with arm rest facility.
