Grand Cinema Shanghai
China - Xian - Beijing - Guangzhou - Chengdu - Dalian - Shenzhen - Shanghai - Hangzhou
Designed by a German architect L.E. Hudec, Grand Cinema was constructed in 1928. The building is a fine example of German architectural genius. Dubbed by the Westerners as “The Best Cinema of the Far East”, this was the most gorgeous building of Shanghai during1930s. The hall closed down in 1931 due to wrong choice of films. In the following year however, a joint venture between a Cantonese named Lu Geng and a British national, revived this cinema hall.
Grand Cinema now remains one of the very few heritage structures in Shanghai that has survived demolition in this ultra modern Chinese city. The butter-maize colored exterior of this building resembles a huge sail blowing against a strong wind. The Shanghai government has kept it under protection.
Grand Cinema in Shanghai screens some of the best Chinese movies. Hollywood blockbusters with Chinese subtitles are also exhibited. Ranked as a four-star cinema hall, Grand cinema is equipped with an international standard Dolby Stereo system.
You can book your ticket on telephone. The booking counter remains open everyday between 9 o' clock in the morning and 7:30 in the evening. Located on Nanjing Road (West) in the Huangpu district of Shanghai, Grand Cinema is a very comfortable venue for watching films.
