Once a sleepy fishing village, Shanghai is now a major economic city in China. With skyscrapers, bridges and wide roads changing the face of this city, old buildings are being pulled down everyday. The busy life however demands some relaxation. There are numerous bars and pubs in Shanghai. Frequented by every stratum of the society, the cinema halls are however the most popular way of relaxing and get entertained at the same time.

Regarded as "The Best Cinema of the Far East" by the westerners even in 1930s, Grand cinema still exhibits a wide variety of films. Designed by a German architect L.E. Hudec, the building is so elegant that the government of Shanghai has kept it under protection.

A fine and rare example of Art Deco style cinema halls, Cathay cinema has now become a multiplex with three small auditoriums. With a combined seating capacity of only 584 seats, this cinema hall is much liked by the spectators.

It may not be a cinema hall in the truest sense of the term, but Judy's Too Movies in Shanghai screens two films every Sunday. This place actually houses a bar cum restaurant which is upstairs. Generally old classics are exhibited on Sundays. But if you are lucky then you can watch contemporary film as well.
