With the coming of modernity and newer and most popular forms of entertainments like cinema looming on the horizon, theatre lovers had feared the death of this entertainment form. However, proving all of them wrong- this ancient art, since the days of ancient Greeks and proud Romans, is still very much alive. Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe is one theater company that has, over the years, been able to build a reputation by delivering rich plays and breath taking acrobatics.

The Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe participates in the China Peking Opera Art Festival, which is held once in every three years. Last performed in December 2004, the next festival is scheduled to be organized in 2007. Held at a number of Chinese cities one after another, this troupe after performing in Tianjin, Beijing and Nanjing finally entertained the Shanghai audience.

A total of 21 plays were staged during the festival. Out of these 13 were original and based on historical but true stories. Staged by Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe, “The Disinterested Governor Yu Chenglong” which was based on the real life of Lian Li Yu Chenglong received most critical acclamation.

Acrobatics is one of the four main features of this festival and Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe excelled in this department. The other departments like singing, recitation also saw rich performance by this opera trope.
